College Students and the Vote

Thu Jun 22, 2006 at 09:08:51 AM PDT

I have a daughter who is eighteen and a registered voter.  She is currently attending a small liberal arts college and is a member of the Young Democrats on campus.  Her college with a population of roughly 1400 students represents 49 states and numerous countries.  The campus is composed of mostly liberal/progressive students who enjoy debating politics and issues.  So why don't they vote?  Recently there have been a few diaries debating that issue here, but my daughter says that the main reason is that most of the students do not know how to obtain an absentee ballot from their home state?   In our particular district my daughter must write or come in person to the county clerks office not more than forty days or less than one day prior to the election, fill out a form and mail it back in, then wait for the absentee ballot to be mailed back to her.

My mother called me a radical last weekend.

We were having a political discussion last weekend and my mother called me a radical and Pat Buchanan on Hardball last evening said the era that I grew up in was the start of the decline in the American moral compass.  I grew up in the 60's early 70's so yes I am old.  Did that era frame who I am today as a person?  You bet.   Am I a radical?  I am not sure and I am hoping some of you will let me know.

This is my first diary, but I have been reading the DailyKos for quite sometime and just got up the nerve to register.  It has been a bit scary here recently with all of the Troll talks, but I decided it was time to let you know why I am here.
